This page explains who receives a district computer, how equipment is assigned, and how to request a device. It covers full-time employees, temporary and student employees, and part-time faculty.
Who receives a district computer
| Employee type | Equipment provided |
|---|---|
| Full-time faculty, administrators, and permanent classified employees | One district standard laptop with your choice of operating system (Windows or macOS), plus one set of peripherals. You should have received a computer through your department’s new hire and onboarding process. |
| TEA, temporary, and student employees | Due to resource limitations, the district does not provide devices. A department may purchase a device with department funds, coordinated through ETS. Devices purchased with department funds are not part of the standard computer upgrade process. |
| Part-time faculty | The district maintains a small pool of loaner laptops. See the part-time faculty equipment loan process on the Faculty Resources page. Departments are responsible for tracking loaned equipment and ensuring it is returned. |
Requesting a computer
If you are a full-time employee and need a computer or a refresh of your current device, submit a request at helpdesk.fhda.edu using the Request a Service tile.
To request a loaner for a part-time faculty member, have the employee log in at helpdesk.fhda.edu with their district credentials and submit a PT Faculty Computer Loan request.
How equipment is assigned
Unless your department or position requires a specific operating system (for example, software that only runs on Windows), you may choose Windows or macOS when a device is assigned to you. Due to resource limitations, your assigned device may not always be brand new.
New positions
An employee hired into a newly created position typically receives a district standard device with the operating system of their choice.
Replacing an employee who left the district
An employee replacing someone who left the district is assigned the previous employee’s device. If they prefer a different operating system, an appropriate district standard device is provided instead.
Replacing an employee who changed positions
An employee who changes positions within the district may — with the permission of their previous direct supervisor — bring their assigned equipment to the new position. The employee hired to replace them then receives a district standard device with the operating system of their choice. If the prior employee left their equipment behind, the replacement is assigned that device as described above.
One device, one set of peripherals
Each full-time employee is entitled to one device, following the approved laptop-based standard. An employee with a desktop who wants a laptop must surrender the desktop when the laptop is assigned.
Each employee is also entitled to one set of peripherals (dock, keyboard, mouse, and monitor or monitors) to support their laptop. Employees who work both remotely and on campus may choose where to install their peripherals — home or campus — but may not have a set in both locations.
