Phones & Voicemail

Foothill–De Anza uses a Cisco VoIP telephone system. Depending on your role and the computer you use, your district phone may be a physical desk phone, a software phone that runs on your computer, an app on your cell phone, or a combination. This section explains what each option is, how to set it up, and what to do when something stops working.

Quick Tips

  • Dial 9 before the number for any outside call.
  • Dial 911 for emergencies. If you dial 911 by mistake, do not hang up — stay on the line and tell the operator you dialed in error.
  • Dial 4 digits to reach another district extension.
  • Press the Messages button on your desk phone to reach your voicemail.

Quick Support for Common Issues

Nobody is calling me, but people say they've tried.

Check whether call forwarding is on. This catches people out constantly, because the desk phone label reads backwards from what you'd expect:

  • If the bottom of the display reads Forward All, forwarding is OFF. Nothing is wrong.
  • If it reads Forward off, forwarding is ON. Press the softkey below Forward off to turn it off.

There is no other indicator that forwarding is active, so it is easy to switch on by accident and not notice.

Also check that Do Not Disturb is not on — with DND active the phone flashes rather than rings and callers go to voicemail. Press the far-right softkey (…) while the phone is idle and select Do Not Disturb to toggle it off.

I installed Jabber but it isn't working.

Was Jabber provisioned before you installed it? Your account has to be provisioned on the phone system before the software is installed and used. If Jabber was installed first and used for calls before provisioning finished, the client often needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled before it will work.

The same applies to the mobile app: if you installed it before backend provisioning was complete, authenticated, and received an error, you may need to delete the app and reinstall it even after provisioning finishes.

If you're not sure whether your account was provisioned, or which type of Jabber was requested for you, check with your manager and then submit an ETS Request for Help.
