This article walks students through enrolling in Duo multi-factor authentication, which is required for MyPortal. New to Duo? Start with Overview - Duo MFA for Students. Enrollment takes about 3–5 minutes once the app is installed.
Before you start
- A computer to sign in to MyPortal.
- A mobile phone (iPhone with iOS 17+ or Android 12+ recommended). No smartphone? A regular mobile phone or landline works too — you'll get passcodes by text or a phone call instead.
- Your CWID and MyPortal password.
Step 1 — Install Duo Mobile (recommended)
- On your phone, open the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- Search for Duo Mobile and install it. The app is free.
Already use Duo Mobile for another school or job? Don't install it again — the app holds multiple accounts, and FHDA enrollment will add an "FHDA" account alongside your existing ones.
Step 2 — Enroll through MyPortal
- On your computer, sign in to myportal.fhda.edu with your CWID and password. The Duo enrollment prompt appears automatically.
- At the First, add a devicescreen, choose your method:
- Duo Mobile (recommended) — enter your mobile number, click Add phone number, and confirm.
- Phone number — if you don't have a smartphone; check This is a landline phone if it is one.
- If you chose Duo Mobile, scan the QR code shown on your computer screen with the app: tap Add (iPhone) or the + sign (Android), choose Use QR code, and aim the camera at the screen. Name the account and save.
- Approve the test authentication — tap the push on your phone, answer the call, or enter the texted passcode.
- Click Yes, this is my device to skip the Duo prompt on that browser for the next 15 days.
- Duo may skip the QR step automatically if it can verify your phone another way — going straight from "Verify passcode" to "Added Duo Mobile" is normal.
- QR codes expire within a few minutes. If yours expires, click Back in the browser, reopen the QR step to refresh the code, and scan it right away.
Add a second method before you finish. Enroll at least two options — for example Duo Mobile and a second phone number, or Duo Mobile and Touch ID. If your phone is ever lost, broken, or replaced, the backup is what keeps you out of a lockout. (Touch ID alone is strongly discouraged — it only works on the one device it was set up on.)
Adding a device later
- Sign in to MyPortal in a private/incognito window so the Duo prompt appears.
- At the prompt, click Other options, scroll down, and click Manage devices.
- Verify your identity, then click Add a device in the Device Management Portal.
