This article is for students. It explains what Duo multi-factor authentication (MFA) is and what changes when you log in to MyPortal. To enroll, see Duo Installation and Setup; for problems, see Duo MFA help & troubleshooting.
What Duo is
Duo MFA adds a second layer of security on top of your password. After you sign in with your CWID and password, Duo verifies it's really you by sending a notification, code, or call to a device you own. Even if someone steals your password, they can't get into your account without this added level of authentication.
All FHDA users — students and employees — must enroll in Duo MFA to access MyPortal. Duo cannot be disabled for your account.
What you need to enroll
- A computer to sign in to MyPortal.
- A mobile phone (iPhone with iOS 17+ or Android 12+ recommended) with the free Duo Mobile app installed — from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- Your CWID and MyPortal password.
No smartphone? You can enroll a regular mobile phone or a landline to receive text passcodes or phone calls instead — choose Phone number at the "First, add a device" screen during enrollment.
Enrollment takes about 3–5 minutes if Duo Mobile is already on your phone.
What logging in looks like now
- Enter your CWID and password as usual.
- Approve the Duo prompt — usually a push notification you tap on your phone.
- You're sent to the MyPortal homepage.
Click Yes, this is my device (trust this browser) after approving, and Duo skips the prompt on that specific browser for 15 days. On a different browser or device, or after 15 days, you'll be prompted again.
Always enroll at least two methods. For example, Duo Mobile and a second phone number, or Duo Mobile and Touch ID. If you lose or replace your phone, the backup method is what keeps you from being locked out of registration, email, and everything else behind MyPortal.
Common questions
Is the Duo Mobile app free?
Yes — completely free to download and use.
I already use Duo Mobile for another school or job.
Don't install it again — the app holds multiple accounts. Completing FHDA enrollment adds an "FHDA" account alongside your existing ones.
Can I use only Touch ID?
You can, but it's strongly discouraged. Touch ID works only on the one device it was set up on, so you'd be locked out from any other computer. Always pair it with Duo Mobile or a phone number.
Can I disable Duo?
No. Duo is required for all FHDA MyPortal access for all students.
