This article is for faculty and staff. It explains what Duo multi-factor authentication (MFA) is, when you'll see it, and your verification options. To enroll, see Duo Installation and Setup; for problems, see Duo Troubleshooting and Fixes.
What Duo is
Duo MFA adds a second layer of security on top of your password. After you sign in with your CWID and MyPortal password, Duo verifies it's really you by sending a notification, code, or call to a device you own. Even if someone steals your password, they can't get into your account without that second step.
All FHDA users — employees and students — must enroll in Duo to access MyPortal. Duo cannot be disabled for your account, and it protects everything behind Campus Single Sign-On, including logins from classroom computers.
What logging in looks like
- Enter your CWID and MyPortal password as usual.
- Approve the Duo prompt — usually a push notification you tap on your phone.
- You're sent to the MyPortal homepage.
Click Yes, this is my device (trust this browser) after approving, and Duo skips the prompt on that specific browser for 15 days. On a different browser or device, or after 15 days, you'll be prompted again.
Your verification options
- Duo Mobile push (recommended) — a tap-to-approve notification on your phone. Works best with Duo's security checks, including higher-risk logins that only accept the app.
- Phone call — Duo calls a mobile or landline number you registered; answer and press any key.
- Text passcode — Duo texts a code you type into the prompt.
- Touch ID — fingerprint approval, but it only works on the one device it was set up on.
- Hardware token — a physical security key can be arranged through the ETS Help Desk if you don't have a suitable phone.
Always enroll at least two methods. For example, Duo Mobile plus a second phone number or landline. If you lose or replace your primary device, the backup is what keeps you from being locked out of everything.
Common questions
Is the Duo Mobile app free?
Yes — free to download and use, from the App Store or Google Play.
What can the app see on my phone?
Almost nothing. It cannot read your contacts, texts, photos, files, or location, and cannot see your other apps. It only knows the accounts you add, and uses the camera (with permission) solely to scan QR codes.
How often will I be prompted?
Once per browser per 15 days if you choose to trust the browser after approving.
I already use Duo Mobile for another organization.
Keep the same app — FHDA enrollment adds an "FHDA" account alongside your existing ones.
Part-time faculty between quarters?
Duo doesn't change your access to email, Canvas history, grades, or rosters — access policies are the same as before MFA.
Can I disable Duo?
No. Duo is required for all FHDA MyPortal access.
