AI Across Foothill-De Anza
Faculty, classified professionals, administrators, and students across Foothill College, De Anza College, and Central Services are exploring how artificial intelligence can support teaching, learning, student success, research, and district operations. These initiatives range from early exploration to established programs and reflect the distinct interests and needs of each college community.
The District AI Work Group brings together representatives from across Foothill-De Anza to examine emerging AI uses, review existing policies, identify areas where additional guidance may be needed, and share effective practices. Its work supports a coordinated approach grounded in human judgment, privacy, accessibility, equity, security, and transparency.
Teaching and Learning
Faculty at both colleges are exploring how AI is changing instruction, assessment, academic integrity, and student learning.
At De Anza, this work includes an interdisciplinary AI Community of Practice, AI Open Labs with instructional designers, an AI Curriculum Task Force, library-based AI literacy instruction, and AI workshops offered through the Student Success Center.
At Foothill, faculty participate in the Opposite of Cheating Book Club, the AI Learning Community, AI Fellows, faculty onboarding revisions, and pilots of instructional tools such as Rumi.

AI Literacy and Professional Learning
Foothill and De Anza are expanding opportunities for employees and students to develop practical AI literacy. Activities include workshops, communities of practice, book discussions, open labs, online courses, instructional support, and discipline-specific projects.
At De Anza, faculty and student support professionals are incorporating AI literacy into library instruction, tutoring, workshops, and discipline-based communities of practice.
At Foothill, employees can participate in the Google Accelerator Program, AI Learning Community activities, Emerging Technologies Institute events, and other professional learning opportunities.

Curriculum and Academic Pathways
Faculty across the district are developing academic opportunities that prepare students to understand and use artificial intelligence responsibly.
De Anza is developing a Certificate in Applied AI with multiple entry points, including noncredit certificates, transferable coursework, and an associate degree pathway. Its interdisciplinary AI Curriculum Task Force is also working to coordinate course development across departments.
Foothill offers coursework and credentials in artificial intelligence and machine learning, including instruction in programming, data science, ethics, privacy, bias, and applied AI.

Research and Emerging Technologies
Both colleges are building capacity for interdisciplinary research and applied innovation.
De Anza is exploring an expansion of the Emerging Technologies Institute model, developing physical spaces for emerging technology work, and supporting research through initiatives such as VERITAS.
Foothill’s Emerging Technologies Institute provides labs, project-based courses, student research opportunities, internships, and interdisciplinary work involving AI, robotics, machine learning, engineering, mathematics, and computer science.

Student Success and Academic Integrity
Faculty and student services professionals are examining how AI affects writing, research, academic integrity, and student support.
De Anza is exploring approaches to AI-related student conduct cases, integrating AI literacy into library and Student Success Center services, and evaluating emerging research tools.
Foothill faculty are developing assignments, course policies, and writing activities that establish clearer expectations for responsible AI use while supporting authentic learning.
