  ETAC Committee

June 6, 2006 Minutes

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY ADVISORY
COMMITTEE

6/06/2006, 1:30-2:00 pm

ATTENDEES: Tom Dolen, David Gillett, Scott Heffner, Mike Murphy, Willie Pritchard

GUESTS: Sharon Luciw

Convened: 1:33 pm

1. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING

· Will stand approved as posted

2. SERVICE LEVEL AGREEMENTS – CAN WE MOVE THE SLAs THROUGH TO THE CAC?

· DA academic senate recommended a no vote on the SLA's

Tom Dolen noted that there have been a lot of ideas generated by the different senates and yet no real changes have been made to the basic documents

All that the discussions generated was a 22 page FAQ, which seems to be a symptom of the fact that none of the issues were addressed

FAQ's were supposed to be an interim response back and a methodology whereby ETS could get more input back based upon the way ETS responded to the questions
FAQ's that could not be done by ETS due to lack of resources were not incorporated or included in the SLA's

The SLA documents are complicated and difficult to understand
The SLA's that are posted to the web, do not contain track changes

Scott Heffner suggested that any changes, to the SLA's, from this point forward should include track changes until a resolution has been reached

Willie is more than willing to go to the senate meetings and talk and hear what the issues are as well as share what the issues are from ETS's perspective

Scott suggested that, in the future, such things as SLA's be presented only to those groups that are affected by them

· In a prior meeting John Swensson had expressed that the DA Deans were supportive of what was there and didn't recommend any changes
· Chuck Lindauer has periodically expressed, in prior meetings, support for the SLA's as they stand
· If ETAC says no to the SLA's, ETS has no official SLA's in place but will be operating under the assumptions of what is in the SLA's

ETS needs to have something out there so people know what the expectations are, otherwise we don't have any guidelines

Now, at least ETS has guidelines whether they are sanctioned or not – ETS would like to have the SLA's sanctioned and have more time to be able to work out the issues

· According to Mike Murphy, the FH academic senate heard the presentations but has not yet discussed the SLA's

Mike intends to get the FH academic senate mobilized and have them pay more attention to the documents

· The primary functions of an SLA are to give guidelines for ETS to follow and to set expectations for the user community of what ETS can and is doing

Most four-year institutions have SLA's in place
Community colleges aren't as likely to have SLA's but there are some that do

· The committee was unable to reach a resolution and therefore ETS will operate under the SLA's as they stand, because it is what ETS says they can guarantee and promise they will be able to fulfill
· ETS will revise the SLA's, factoring in the FAQ's, and then take them out again for review

3. OTHER ITEMS FROM THE COMMITTEE

· There may not be another ETAC meeting for this academic year

4. ADJOURNMENT

· Adjourned: 2:22 pm

Next Meeting: Wednesday, June 21, 2006, 12:30 – 2:00, via videoconferencing?
