· Minutes will stand approved as posted

2.  GENERAL NEWS – NEWSBYTES TO BE SENT OUT ON MONDAY, MARCH 24, PRIMARY TOPIC TO BE ON DATA AND NETWORK SECURITY

· NewsBytes will be sent out this coming Monday

It was suggested by the N & S subcommittee that there be more topics on educating the general public about issues concerning security

Will periodically do an issue on this topic

Security is a major problem in this district because we have servers that are attacked, that are not under ETS control, which then brings them down as well as some part of the network
3.  SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS – HARDWARE/SOFTWARE STANDARDS, NETWORK & SYSTEMS, INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY, INFORMATION SYSTEMS, COMPUTER USE POLICY

· Network & Systems, & Web Committee – Sharon Luciw

No update

Has a meeting scheduled for next week, with the N & S and the Web subcommittees to discuss how they should merge and form a new committee

· Hardware & Software  - Willie

Met last week

Discussed establishing a new standard for the Mac laptop

The new standard will be the new low -end priced PowerBook, instead of the iBook

The difference in price is less than $200
The enhancements, power and life span will be much longer that the iBook

There was a discussion related to section 508 & OS X licensing issues
Discussion for licensing or not licensing, Win Zip  (for the PC) and making it a standard,
A decompression utility on the Windows computer

Currently install Free Zip on every ones Windows machine

Also set a schedule for the rest of the academic year
· Instructional Technology – Cindy Vinson
No update
· Information Systems – Gerry Gyuire
No update
· Appropriate Use Committee
Waiting for the DA College Council to vote on the Computer Use Policy

They are meeting this afternoon to vote on the policy
The council had their information session two weeks ago

Will bring up for a vote at the next ETAC meeting (March 27th)
Will be an information item at the next Chancellors Advisory Council meeting, on March 21st
Will be an action item at the April 11th meeting

Will then go onto the Board the second week in April
Currently on track to meet the original schedule

4. UPDATE ON POLICY FOR ELECTRONIC AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ACCESSIBILITY STANDARDS – WAYNE CHENOWETH

· Took out the appendices
· The policy page is the same
· Some changes made to the procedures
Outlined two steps to take, to determine if a product meets the standards, and the ways to do that
There is a template & checklist to help in the process
· The responsibility for compliance is stated in the second paragraph, on the second policy page

· This policy applies to the purchase of any EIT product
· At this time, we are not sure what the consequences are for noncompliance
John Shupe, the district’s attorney, suggests holding off on making this a board policy until there is more clarity on what the consequences for non-compliance are

5. REPORT ON RESULTS OF TECH USE SURVEY

· This is the fourth iteration of this survey
The first two survey s were done at De Anza
This is the second survey since the inception of ETS
· The percentage is of the total respondents as opposed to a specific group of respondents
· Willie did a quick review of the survey results
· Greg McIlhiney applauded ETS’ increased communication in informing the District through NewsBytes, ETAC & e-mails
Only problem he could see in the increased communication  is that if there is a virus, it would be good to know which type of computer (Mac/Windows)  is affected

· The total survey, along with the full comments, is on the ETS web site

· In the next survey, should ask what type of computer is used at work, besides what their preference is

6.  OTHER ITEMS FROM THE COMMITTEE

· ETS is working on a wireless solution in a staged way
New measure E buildings are being wired for wireless
·  Hope to have an RFP (request for proposal) for Maui sometime in March
Lourdes Del Rio-Parent has been interviewing heavy Maui users
There is an on line survey that IR is doing to assist in the analysis of the user base
Data will be real time in the new environment
Adjourned:  10:29 am

Next Meeting:  March 27, 2003, 9:00 am, Foothill Carriage House Conference Room
