2. GENERAL NEWS – ETS TECH USE SURVEY WILL
BE ONLINE UNTIL FRIDAY, JANUARY 24; NEXT NEWSBYTES TO BE SENT OUT ON MONDAY,
PRIMARY TOPIC WILL BE NETWORK AND DATA SECURITY
· ETS tech computer use survey will be on
line through tomorrow, January 24th
On Tuesday, January 21st there had been 352
responses - not too far off from last years response
There was hope to have more faculty respond to the survey
May have a preliminary report by next meeting
· NewsBytes will be sent out on Monday, January 27th
Lead topic will be on network security
Each issue will contain a new regular feature - " Institutional
Research Spotlight"
The first institutional Research Spotlight article is based
upon a study done for management on early registration
Each successive article will be a report on a study that Institutional Research
has done
3. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS – HARDWARE/SOFTWARE
STANDARDS, WEB STANDARDS, NETWORK & SYSTEMS, INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY,
ADMIN SYSTEMS
· Network & Systems, &
Web Committee -Sharon Luciw
No update
· Hardware & Software - Willie
No update
· Instructional Technology - Cindy
Vinson
No update
· Information Systems - Gerry Gyuire
Sub committee is in the process of being formed
Nothing to report
· ETAC is currently scheduled to
meet on February 13th,the second Thursday of the month
Willie will be out of town
· Should be able to have a revised
Computer Use Policy by February 6th
· Thursday mornings at 9:00 am
is still a good time for this meeting
· Optional dates to replace the
February 13th meeting are the first or third Thursday in February
The February 13th meeting will be moved
up to the 6th of February
· The sub committee held two public
meetings on January 22nd
One in the FH Board Room and one
in the Hinson Center at DA
· There were some suggestions made
to the committee that they need to take a serious look at whether or not students
need to be a part of this policy, or have their own, separate policy
Any references to students will
probably remain in the document to prevent any delays in getting the policy
passed
There are plans to post the policy in the student handbooks and in a variety
of other places
· Some discussion about commercial
use was brought up at both campus meetings
· There are conditions in the SEIU
& FA contracts regarding intellectual property and they take precedence
over this policy
· Technical &/or instructional
support should be added to the wording of the policy
· George Krestas wanted to know
who was going to police this policy
At this time there is no one to
do any type of monitoring
The only monitoring that ETS currently does, is to monitor the network and
any equipment that fails; when "events" occur ETS responds and
that's when violations are discovered
· ETS will face the same cuts as
everyone else will
· We have some vacant positions
(Director, Client Services; one tech position; web administrator) - which
will not get filled
This will cause some deterioration
of services in these areas
· From this year's budget, we will
lose any float that would have accrued from the vacant positions as well as
any of our carry over from our "B" budget
· For next years budget, we are
drawing up plans for an additional 15% cut (on top of this years cuts)
Cuts will come from the combined "A" (approximately
$8M) and "B" (approximately $1.3M) budgets
Our "A" budget which covers salaries, also includes some maintenance
agreements, as well as the budget for paying phone bills
A 15% cut is more than our total "B" budget
$1.267M - yearly, ongoing costs that are critical to maintaining the operation
of the district (some of theses funds are included in our discretionary
"B" budget and can not be cut)
Maintenance for hardware for the network, admin systems & servers
Contractual agreements for maintaining above equipment
Data center security
Campus software site licensing agreements
Network & Phone services( for local & long distance) as well as
the phone system
Likely to have layoffs which will cause a reduction in services
· Need to be in close communication
with both colleges with what their needs are
The cuts in our area will be dependant
upon what services the colleges say they need to have
· Likely to loose certain TTIP funding
Not likely to lose the funding
for two of our three T-3 lines, which allows us adequate pipe out to the
Internet
These two lines are our connection into the CSU system
Our third T-3 line is through Pac Bell
HR support, and the library are being affected by the cuts
CVC funding is being cut
· The first meeting will be held
tomorrow, January 24th at 9:00am in the DA Admin Conference Room
· First meeting will look at what
has been done so far
Will also discuss future meeting
times
· Need to review the ETAC Strategic
Plan
The complete version of the plan
can be found on the ETS web site
9. REVISION OF TECHNOLOGY PLAN
· No discussion
10. OTHER ITEMS FROM THE COMMITTEE
· Maui replacement
IR & IS are doing a needs analysis of primary
users
In Feb plan to do an on line survey
The survey will be sent to Managers and all users
· In order to use the new TouchNet system a user has to have
Netscape 7 or Internet Explorer 5.1
· The new schedule for Networks & Systems
There has been no support on holidays since the beginning
of the year
Starting 4/1/03:
There will be no physical support on weekends
There will be no one to cover absentees
Services will be delayed - such as printing
When the system needs to come down, it will happen earlier
in the day
With no one physically present in the data center at night, if something
happens, N&S may not know until first thing in the morning
Interruptions in service will happen during normal business hours instead
of after hours
· De Anza will not hold classes on Saturday
The lab in the ATC will be closed on Saturdays' lab hours
on Friday will be extended
It is not known if FH will hold classes on Saturdays
The KCI link classes will still be held on Saturdays
On Saturday, April 12th, Distance Learning will not
hold an orientation
· A good opening day focus group activity would be the Tech
Computer Use Survey
This would allow for more participation by faculty
Adjourned: 10:21
am
Next Meeting: February
13, 2003, 9:00 am, De Anza Admin Conference Room??
