  ETAC Committee

November 2, 2004 Hardware & Software Minutes

Meeting Notes  - 11/2/04

Present: Stan Judkins, Drake Lewis, Sharon Luciw, Dan Mitchell, Penny Patz, Wayne Chenoweth, John Vandercook, Jose Rueda, Willie Pritchard

Absent: Tom Lindstrom, Allison Lenkeit (maternity leave)

The meeting started with a review of our current peripheral standards. John and Jose went over the standards and indicated that the current printer standards and mobile projector standard needed review and revision.

Jose pointed out that the current network printer (HP 4200N) is no longer available, but that the HP4250N has replaced that model.  Also, the non-networked single-user laser printer (HP LaserJet 2300) is replaced by 2400 and the non-networked single-user double-sided laser printer (HP LaserJet 2300d) has been replaced by the 2420D. All model changes have resulted in a slight drop in price. After discussion the committee agreed to modify the standards to accommodate these changes by HP.

Also, our current mobile projector standard, the InFocus LP130, is no longer available. Jose presented two different models as possible substitutes for that product, based on his research of the current market products. Those were the InFocus LP70+ or the Panasonic PT-LB10VU.  After discussion the committee decided to replace the current, but unavailable, projector with the InFocus LP70+ due to a lower cost and longer bulb life than the Panasonic model.

Stan brought up the issue of spyware prevention and eradication, suggesting that we needed a district-wide solution. He pointed out that removal of spyware is very time consuming and that it usually comes right back after it has been removed. Wayne asked if Symantec had a suitable spyware detector/eradicator. Stan suggested that we investigate various alternatives -- such as Pest Patrol, Panda, or others. After discussion it was decided that the techs should do an investigation between now and the next meeting and that the agenda for the next meeting should include a report on what alternatives they found, pros and cons, and possible costs, with the goal of determining a standard.

The meeting then was adjourned.
