How do I customize my Portal page?

Return to Portal FAQ's

Changing Your Page | Field Descriptions | Adding and Removing Portlets - Step by Step

You can use the 'Add or Remove Portlets' link at the upper right corner of your 'My Page' tab to control the portlets and tabs that are displayed on your version of the page. The changes you make are visible only to you. Other users of the page cannot view them. From this page, you can perform the following:

  • Add, arrange, show/hide, move, and delete portlets. (You cannot create new regions for portlets.)
  • Add, arrange, show/hide, and delete tabs. (You cannot create new regions for tabs.)

Notes:

  • If you cannot perform actions on certain areas (or regions) of the page, the Enable Users To Include Content In This Region option for the region may not be set to allow changes. This is likely intentional, but you can contact the page designer for more information if you believe it is an error.
  • If a portlet or tab's name is gray, this means that it is currently hidden and does not appear on the page. If a portlet or tab is hidden, you can still perform other actions on it, such as show, delete, or move.

Changing Your Page

The portal page displayed under the 'My Page' tab can be modified to show the portlets that you choose. Currently, this is the only existing area you can change. If you create a new tab, you will be able to add content there as well.

When you click the "Add or Remove Portlets" link in the upper right corner of the page, you will see something similar to the following image. Some regions of the page may contain content that cannot be changed, and these will not display the icons used for modification. To customize the regions that are able to be changed, follow the instructions below.

Field Descriptions

Field Description

'Remove My Page Customizations' link

Restores the page to its original settings. For example, this removes any portlets or tabs added to the page. It also restores any portlet or tab that was deleted.

Note: All your customizations are removed, no matter how long ago they were made.

'Remove My Tab Customizations' link

Removes any changes made to the currently active tab. For example, this removes any portlets or sub-tabs that were added to the tab through user customization. (Base portlets, those that were included on the tab prior to customization, are restored, if they were moved from the tab.)

Note: All your customizations are removed, no matter how long ago they were made.

 'Hide' Button

To hide a portlet or tab, select the check box next to its name and click Hide. You can select multiple portlets and tabs for hiding.

Note: Hiding a portlet or tab does not remove it from the page, but merely prevents it from displaying.

 'Delete' Button

To delete a portlet or tab, select the check box next to its name and click Delete. A confirmation screen is displayed where you can choose to continue or cancel the deletion. You can select multiple portlets and tabs for deleting.

Note: If you delete a tab, you will not have the opportunity to relocate the tab's content to another tab, so be sure to do so before clicking Delete.

 'Move' Button

To move a portlet to a different region, select the check box next to its name and click Move. A screen is displayed in which you can select the region where you want to move the portlet. You can select multiple portlets for moving.

Note: You cannot move tabs since there is no way to identify where to move them.

After you add a portlet, the portlet name appears within the region.

When you include more than one portlet in a region, the portlets are arranged either in rows or columns, depending on the region properties. You can change the order in which the portlets are displayed in a region by clicking Arrange.

Note: The actual data does not appear within a portlet until you click Close or display the page from the Navigator.

You can also edit the regions within your tab by clicking Edit icon or delete a region by clicking Delete icon.

Notes:

  • You can only edit the configuration of the regions in tabs that you have added yourself.

  • If you remove a region that contains portlets, you can relocate them to another region on the delete confirmation screen.

Adding and Removing Portlets - Step by Step

When you click the 'Add or Remove Portlets' link you will see a window similar to the following. Below the 'Portlet Repository' banner (beneath the 'Available Portlets' header) you will see a folder that contains portlets for your group. In this case you see the folder containing portlets available for Central Services staff. Click on the folder name.

When you click on the folder name, the Central Services Staff folder opens to show portlets available to that group. Portlets available may vary depending on your campus, division, or work group. Select the portlet you would like to add to the region by clicking it's name from the list on the left.

When you select a portlet, it will appear on the list of portlets in the region displayed as a list on the right side of the page (beneath the 'Selected Portlets' header). By default, new portlets will appear below the bottom portlet already in the region (here the 'Today in History' portlet). In this case a new Weather portlet was added as shown below.

You can use the arrows at the right of the portlet box to rearrange the portlet display order. Select the portlet and use the top or bottom arrow to move the portlet all the way to the top or bottom. The arrows between the top and bottom move the portlet one position up or down. These functions duplicate what appears when you click the Arrange Portlets icon Arrange Portlets or Items icon in the initial 'Add Portlet' view.

The red 'X' can be used to delete a portlet (select the portlet from the list and click the Delete icon symbol). The same thing can be done in the 'Add Portlet' view by checking the box next to the portlet name and clicking the 'Delete' button.

The Weather portlet now appears in the region you selected. If you decide to remove a portlet, check the box next to the portlet name and then click the 'Delete' button at the top.

A dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the delete. Click 'Yes' and the portlet will be removed.
